Celebrating Sleep Awareness Week: How you can improve your sleep health
National Sleep Awareness Week takes place every year in Australia, and this year’s dates are March 13-19, 2022. Make this week a priority in your calendars, and educate yourself on the importance of sleep to help enhance your general health. This year’s Sleep Awareness Week slogan is “Quality Sleep, Sound Mind, Happy World”.
As a society, we do not get enough sleep. According to the RedMed Sleep Survey, 41% of Australians do not get enough sleep, 35% wake up exhausted, and 23% need more than half an hour to fall asleep. This is why we wanted to discuss the importance of celebrating Sleep Awareness Week and examine the importance of healthy sleep.
Why do we need more sleep?
So, what happens if you do get adequate rest? The most evident effect is that you feel better since your body and mind have had some time to rest and recharge. You’ll most likely be in a better mood and more productive.
Getting good sleep not only strengthens your immune system but also makes it easier for your body to process immunizations. A good night’s sleep will help help you stay active throughout the day, enhancing muscle recovery and hand-eye coordination.
Sleeping more is also beneficial in the long run. Long term inadequate sleep can lead to obesity, which can lead to heart difficulties and other issues.
Ways to get better sleep?
Boost your immunity
Sleep at a comfortable temperature
Summer’s hot, humid air makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Our bodies fail to relax into a deep sleep, the most restful stage during which our bodies can recover the most when we toss and turn at night.
Your body’s normal reaction shortly before sleep is to lower its core temperature and keep it there until you wake up. This process is aided by the cooler air of autumn. It’s why, when it comes to bedtime, we typically urge individuals to keep their bedrooms chilly rather than heated.
Bamboo Sheets will aid this process as they are naturally temperature regulating. When sleeping in sheets made from cotton, your body has to work extra hard to keep your core temperature under control, which it achieves via sweating. The temperature regulating characteristics of bamboo sheets relieve pressure on your body, precisely controlling its temperature as it heats up and cools down.
The ability of your body to control temperature is crucial to how it regulates sleep. Bamboo sheets’ increased airflow not only holds your temperature but also keeps your body cool, dry, and free of sweat.
Relax and unwind
Autumn is the season when animals begin to prepare for hibernation, so we should use it as an opportunity to slow down and commit to a nightly regimen of soothing pre-bed rituals. You may, for example, make it a practice to read a book every night, drink a cup of herbal tea, or soak in a warm scented bath.
It’s better to stay away from electronics and devices that can inhibit the release of melatonin, which is required to fall asleep.
It may seem strange to celebrate something as mundane as sleep. When you consider the advantages of getting a good night’s sleep, National Sleep Awareness Week makes sense.
