A mattress pad has a similar design to a fitted sheet but is often quilted with a plush top. It is a light, thin pad that sits between the mattress and sheets. Mattress pads are designed to add a light layer of comfort whilst also protecting your mattress from stains. It is quite common for them to also include a cooling gel pad.
The primary function of a mattress protector is to protect the mattress from accidental spills, sweat, etc. (a bit obvious, we know!). Its aim is to keep your mattress clean and to act as the physical barrier between you and your mattress. This helps to prevent the development of mould and other nasties on your mattress. A mattress protector is often a very thin sheet-like layer, that helps to extend the lifespan of your mattress.
Mattress toppers are a thick layer of padding, often made from memory foam, that aim to add support and comfort. While it is not their primary function to add protection from stains and spills to your mattress, mattress toppers do still offer protection for your mattress.
A mattress topper will usually contour to the shape of your body, helping to add evenly distributed support. It adds a few extra centimetres between your mattress and you. Generally, a mattress topper will change the whole feel of your bed. If the issue is that your current mattress is too firm, then a mattress topper is probably ideal for you.
Memory foam mattresses can be very expensive – a memory foam mattress topper is a cheaper alternative, to allow you to feel as if you’re sleeping on a memory foam mattress, without paying the hefty price tag.
