Spring has sprung, and in good news for interiors enthusiasts, there are lots of exciting trends on the horizon.
As is usual for this time of year, with the warmer weather, we are seeing an increase in the use of brighter colours & lighter fabrics in homes. So it’s time to put your winter woolies away and embrace a happier, more joyful space by adding in a few new elements.
COLOURS
Spring tones inspired by nature, such as soft green, sea foam blue, and pretty daisy yellow, all evoke that new season air. You can include these in your home without going to dramatic effort or expense by using them in small decorative objects such as throw cushions, artworks & table lamps.
I attended the recent Dulux Trend Forecasts event, and another big theme was earthy colours such as brown, amber and ochre. Brown might seem very 70’s but it is going to be everywhere!
Sustainability is at the forefront of the minds of most people in this day and age, and earthy tones are a reflection of that. Painted ceilings are also going to be huge, and are a brilliant way to change the entire look and feel of a room in one simple step.
FLORALS
Botanical prints and flowers are an ever-present theme during the spring months, as outside flowers bloom everywhere. Bring that fresh, new season feel inside by incorporating some floral accents. Something as simple as a vase of blooms or leaves from your garden will do the job perfectly.
METALS
At the recent Milan Furniture Fair, the go-to destination for global interior professionals, a big trend was chrome & cool-toned metals. This is a welcome change, a departure from all of the brass and gold we’ve seen in the past few years. And if you’ve just put brass taps & handles throughout your home, don’t worry – brass still works really well with spring tones.
BEDDING
On the bed you could add a few new cushions (can you ever have enough cushions in your home!?) or a soft yellow upholstered bedhead to bring in a spring vibe. A strip of removable wallpaper the width of your bed in a floral pattern, placed behind the bed as a bedhead / frame & artwork in one can look very cool and give you an instant spring-like feel.
Organic bamboo bedding is the textile on everyone’s lips as going low-tox for our own health, as well as the health of the environment, is at the forefront of people’s minds.
VENETIAN PLASTER
An architectural finish for use inside or outside the home, Venetian plaster is very fashionable right now. It’ll give an effortless, modern look every time, and you can create some very unique textural finishes, as well as an ultra smooth look with it. You can use it on walls or floors, and it is great in bathrooms where you can have a seamless finish without any joins – from the wall to the basin to the floor.
The new season is a great opportunity to have some fun with your decor and play around with the look and feel of your home. You’d be amazed the difference a few small changes can make!
